Selection Procedures for Plumbers

Summary of Procedures for Application, Qualification and Selection of Plumbing Apprentices

All Applicants must first take and pass the Accuplacer test with the minimum scores listed below. The Accuplacer test is given through the Big Step Program in Racine. There is no fee. Call  262-619-6560.  Applicants must score the following minimum scores in order to qualify to fill out an application: Reading - 249     Arithmetic - 237    Algebra - 235


Applicants that have taken the ACT in the last 5 years can use this test to qualify. The minimum scores are 16 in Reading and 15 in Math. Proof of either of these passed tests is required in order to fill out the application.

Applications are accepted at the Plumbers & Steamfitters Training Center at 14011 Spring Street, Sturtevant. The office is open on Wednesdays, 1:00-5:00 p.m. and Thursdays at 8:00 a.m. until noon. To enure that someone will be there, please call 262-732-4103. Be sure to bring in a current driver's license.

-All applicants for apprenticeship shall not be less than 18 years of age, unless the applicant is a high school graduate at the age of 17.

-All applicants shall be a high school graduate or the equivalent (GED or HED)

-Before placement, an employer may require the applicant to submit to a physical examination.

-All applicants are required to furnish a transcript of their high school record. If not a high school graduate, a copy of his/her GED/HED and a copyof high school transcript is required.

-All applicants must possess a valid driver's license at the time of application for job related duties. A copy of the license will be taken at the time of application.

-It is the responsibility of the applicant to furnish the JAC with the above documentation prior to the interview.

-Applicants with complete files will be notified by certified mail as to the interview date, time and place.

-During the interview process, the Committee members will consider educational background, Accuplacer test scores, interest, work experience, motivation and mechanical ability. All applicants achieving a score of 55 or higher will be placed on the eligibility list.

-Eligibile applicants will be issued a Letter of Introduction. This letter tells employers that the applicant is able to become a Plumbing Apprentice. Copies of this letter are to be given to all potential employers by the applicant that the applicant has applied to.

-It is the responsibility of the applicant to renew the Letter of Introduction before the expiation date. If it is not renewed, the applicant will be dropped from the list.

-An employer must apply to the JAC to employ an apprentice. An employer requesting an apprentice will be given the list of qualified applicants. The employer will notify the JAC of their selection within 7 working days.

-The employer application for an apprentice shall only be valid for 30 days. After the 31st day, a new application must be submitted.

-Applicants will be required to comply with all reasonable requests the JAC deems necessary to assist them in maintaining an objective program.

-Applicants who are requested to appear for job assignment, who fails to do so, will be given no further consideration unless a boda fide reason is provided.

-For all contractors that participate in a drug testing program: It is required that new apprentices submit to and pass a drug teat before the apprentice signs his Apprenticeship Contract with the Department of Workforce Development.
