About Us

Local 118 Plumbers and Steamfitters represents over 500 members serving Kenosha, Racine and Walworth Counties. Our local offers apprenticeships in Plumbing, Steamfitting and Steamfitting-Service (HVAC).

Plumbers install pipe for water, gas, sewage, and drainage systems. They also install sanitary facilities such as lavatories, toilets, bathroom fixtures, showers, kitchen fixtures, drinking fountains, and laundry equipment. Plumbers use a variety of skills to install pipe systems. They use both hand and power tools in their work of cutting, bending and threading pipes, and making welded and soldered joints. Plumbers must also run tests on their installations to assure that the system is functioning properly and meets the plumbing code. They are often called upon to clear pipe lines and drains and make repairs on faucets, valves and leaky pipes.

Steamfitters are craftsmen who assemble, install and maintain pipes to carry water, steam, compressed air, gases and fluids needed for processing, manufacturing, heating or cooling. The journeyman steamfitter must be able to adapt and repair pipe systems and install appliances, heating and refrigeration units and do all types of pipe welding. Steamfitters work with both high and low pressure pipes, mainly in industrial and commercial buildings. They also install and repair residential heating and cooling equipment. For example, they install ammonia-carrying pipe lines in refrigeration plants, complex pipe systems in oil refineries and chemical and food processing plants and automatic sprinkler systems. They know how to prevent corrosion, clogging and breaking of pipe lines and how to test lines for proper operation.

Steamfitter Service mechanics keep the equipment operating that heats and cools our buildings and homes and refrigerates our food. They repair and maintain complex air conditioning and heating systems that are required for total comfort in commercial buildings, continuous operation of computer rooms and special industrial process applications. They must be able to trouble-shoot, diagnose and repair all of the components that make up a total comfort system; compressors, condensers, metering devices, evaporators, air handling units, electronic controls and pneumatic controls. Pumps, water treatment, and cooling towers are other parts of the system requiring repair and maintenance. They install engines, pumps, feed water heaters, turbines, condensers, economizers, tanks, water treating systems and other equipment and piping related to power houses.
